Field of Honor events planned in Idaho Falls

A ceremony is scheduled Saturday, May 26, at Noon to officially open the annual Field of Honor at Freeman Park in Idaho Falls.

It will feature a display of 1,000 American flags along with patriotic programs, music and activities throughout the Memorial Day weekend. It is open to the public and all events are free.

Local dignitaries, veterans groups and others will participate in the opening ceremony Saturday. On Sunday, a variety of family events are planned in the park and there will be free mini-flags and pinwheels for children.

“We can’t honor and recognize our veterans enough,” said Bud Cranor, the public information officer for the City of Idaho Falls. “This a great opportunity especially for families with kids to help them understand how important our veterans are to us and how important our country is.”

Mayor Rebecca Casper will speak during a ceremony scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Monday at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. That event will feature a special presentation from Nancy Shamel, who was instrumental in creating the Freeman Park memorial.
