Man cited after driving into canal

UPDATE: 3:10 p.m. An Idaho Falls man and his passenger crawled out of a canal at around 9:45 p.m. Monday after his car crashed through a building and into a canal near the John’s Hole boat ramps Monday.

Idaho Falls Police said Neill Robert Baker, 22, went over the curb in his 2001 Toyota Camry, drove onto the grass, into a storage shed, and then crashed into the canal. The engine compartment and driver door were submerged in water.

Police estimated property damage to Idaho Falls Power lines and poles, an Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation shed and property inside, and a Department of Energy Weather Station at around $21,000.

Officers said the driver was northbound on River Parkway at a high rate of speed. The road is a one-way street next to the greenbelt walking path. When he approached a stop sign controlled intersection at River Parkway and Landbank Street, the driver failed to stop and drifted west.

Neither Baker nor his adult passenger were wearing seat belts.

Baker was cited for one count of reckless driving.
