Police arrest pursuit suspect

UPDATE 4:15 p.m.: A Pocatello man is behind bars after leading police on a pursuit through two counties and ended in a crash at one busy Idaho Falls intersection on Thursday morning.

Idaho Falls Police were notified of the active pursuit involving the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office and Shelley Police Department around 7:55 a.m.

.At 8:02 a.m., the driver of a 2004 gold Saab convertible crashed with a red Toyota RAV4 near the intersection of Yellowstone Highway 91 and W 17th Street.

Idaho Falls Police and Idaho Falls Emergency Medical Services arrived just minutes later to assist the law enforcement agencies with the accident. The driver of the Saab, identified as 52-year-old Michael T. Casey of Pocatello, had already been detained by Bingham County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Idaho Falls Police diverted and blocked traffic until the scene was secured and measured for accident reconstruction analysis. The only portion of the case which is being handled by Idaho Falls Police is the accident itself.

Preliminary analysis of the accident leads to the conclusion that Michael T. Casey is at fault for the accident and that the driver of the Toyota SUV had no fault in the accident.

IFPD said Casey, the driver of the Saab, was traveling northbound on the Yellowstone Highway when he swerved around a truck in the middle of the intersection. The driver of the SUV was driving westbound on 17th Street through the intersection. After the Saab passed the truck it swerved around, the SUV impacted the passenger side of the Saab, which then sent the Saab over the curb and the vehicle turned around facing oncoming traffic.
