Rexburg celebrates diversity, humanity

The city of Rexburg came together today for a “Celebration of Humanity.”

The event took place in Porter Park and featured inflatables, karaoke and free food. Families also brought picnics and enjoyed the warm weather. The city wanted everyone to join together to celebrate their diversity. Rexburg Mayor Jerry Merrill says it’s important to accept one another.

“It boils down to love and respect for each other,” he said. “You know, we’re not all the same. We have different opinions about things and stuff, but we just need to learn to live together and be able to, you know, enjoy life and enjoy each other instead of finding things to hate each other.”

“It’s really important to break out of those comfort zones and come together as a community,” said Tiffany Collard, the chairman of the Madison County Human Rights Task Force. “And recognize that despite everything that’s different about us we actually have more in common. And that’s kind of what we’re trying to do today is just recognize our shared humanity.”

The event came together just last night and had help and donations from many members in the community.
