Keeping kids active during the summer
The kids are home for the summer and while they’re taking a mental break they should be staying physically active. It’s important to get kids active at an early age.
“When they’re in school they’re sitting down all day except for recess. In the summertime it’s such a great way to get them moving around and just getting that playtime happening,” says Tayler Clayson, Assitant Director of The Little Gym in Idaho Falls.
“Now obesity rates are climbing drastically for children and that’s not good for our nation. It’s climbing for adults as well but if we could get kids active at a young age and get them excited about working out, it’s important because then it’s a lifelong habit,” says Cira Long, Director of Operations of The Little Gym.
And it can start with one simple step.
“Turning off the TV is a big way or you need at least this amount of time before the TV goes back on or electronics come out. I think that’s a huge thing,” says Long.
Being active doesn’t necessarily mean running laps or lifting weights, you can be creative.
“Parents just being able to say hey it’s summer’ you know kids are going to get stir crazy in the house. So making it fun you know, saying the floor is lava let’s put pillows down and jump from pillow to pillow. Just creative things like that parents can do indoors,” says Long.
