Trust buys Wyoming Range oil and gas leases

Oil and gas leases on 24,197 acres in the Wyoming Range Legacy Area will be retired under an agreement announced this week.

The Trust for Public Land (TPL) and two energy companies, Stanley Energy and Mountain Energy, announced the purchase of the leases. They are located under public lands deemed to be a key resource for sporting access and other outdoor recreation south of Jackson. A grant from Wyss Foundation will fund the purchase and retirement of the leases and protect the Wyoming Range from oil and gas drilling.

“Today is a great day for Wyoming and for all those who are passionate about public lands. We applaud all who have given their time and resources over the years and look forward to a future in which the Wyoming Range remains undeveloped and open to all,” said Molly McUsic, President of the Wyss Foundation.

Governor Matt Mead said the Bureau of Land Management has worked with the companies to close out the leases and provide a good balance of development and environmental considerations.

“It is very rare that we have the opportunity to conserve a landscape that is as varied and unique as the Wyoming Range. This project would not have been possible without the efforts and perspective of the Douglas and Lockridge families,” said Chris Deming, Senior Project Manager with The Trust for Public Land. “These families took a long-term view through a difficult process. They were exceptional partners to work with and we are grateful to them for making this happen. We think that everyone who enjoys the Wyoming Range will be thankful too.”

The price tag on the purchase agreement was not disclosed.
