Fire shuts down Highway 33
Update 7/22/18 8:15 p.m.: The BLM say the fire has been mapped at 137 acres and is 78 percent contained.
The BLM confirms the fire was caused by exploding targets, which is illegal on public lands.
This is the third fire in the Menan Butte area this month caused by exploding targets.
Update 7/22/18 6:12 p.m.: The BLM is calling it the Badger Point Fire. It’s 9 miles west of Rexburg.
It is estimated at 80 acres. Containment is expected by 8 p.m. Monday night.
The BLM said no structures are threatened. It is currently burning is grass and brush. There are 21 engines currently on it, as well as one helicopter.
ORIGINAL: A wildfire has shut down Highway 33 for an estimated four hours. The fire is estimated to be around 80 acres.
The fire is near milepost 67.
Fire crews said the fire is moving fast, being pushed by the winds, and is less than 200 yards from the highway, forcing the closure.
Crews are working to contain the east side, according to the Bureau of Land Management.
Officials are asking you to avoid the area and find an alternate route.
Several fire crews are responding, including Madison County, Central Fire, and the BLM.
According to Central Fire District, it was human-caused because of someone shooting.
BLM is currently investigating the cause.
