Highway 33 reopens after closed by Twin Buttes Fire

UPDATE 7/25/18 10:15 a.m. The Bureau of Land Management reports the Twin Buttes Fire has been mapped at 615 acres.

5 engines and 1 dozer will continue securing the perimeter.

Officials estimate containment for Wednesday at 6 p.m.

UPDATE 5:40 p.m. Highway 33 has reopened. The Twin Buttes Fire is 50% contained.

BLM says there is no immediate threat to structures.

15 engines and 5 water tenders (BLM, USFS, BIA, Central Fire District, Madison County Fire Department, Hamer VFD & Roberts VFD), 2 dozers and 1 helicopter are fighting the fire. Multiple retardant drops were made.

The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE: 3:40 p.m. The Twin Buttes Fire is estimated at 600 acres as of 3:40 p.m.UPDATE: The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said Highway 33 and Twin Butte Road are now closed to accommodate firefighters.The “Twin Buttes” fire near Menan Butte is estimated at 25 acres.

Firefighters believe they will have the fire contained by 10 p.m. Tuesday.ORIGINAL STORY:

The Bureau of Land Management has dispatched 5 engines, a dozer, and a helicopter to report of a new fire in the Menan Butte area.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, it’s located just west of East Butte Road between Highway 33 and Twin Butte Road.

The highway is open at this time but may be closed if fire or smoke threaten the road.
