Surgical suite added to the Pocatello Animal Shelter

The Pocatello Animal Shelter is opening up a new surgical suite at their facility. At noon today, they cut the ribbon, officially introducing the new addition to the shelter. The Pocatello animal shelter, already a haven for animals now seems like a hospital.

“With the grants we have received and the donations we have received to be able to build this surgical suite, we are able to care for the medical needs of our animals without having to take them to the vet,” said, Danielle Garcia, director of Pocatello Animal Shelter.

Now, veterinarians can work within the facility rather than having to transport the animals. The surgical suite has a prep room, surgical room and a recovery area; everything needed to ensure the health and happiness of the animals in the shelter.

Garcia says the animals recover much quicker with an in-house surgical room because “they’re not being moved from a vet back to the shelter, and back and forth, they recover a lot faster. They are a lot more comfortable and the anxiety is a lot lower.”

They can also fix the animals before they are adopted. “The last thing people want to hear when they adopt an animal is, ‘well we have to get the animal fixed so you’re going to have to wait two or three days.’ This way, when animals come to the shelter, they are ready to go.” More animals will be taken home while more animals on the street will be taken in by the shelter.
