Caldwell man in custody after 3-county pursuit

A 36-year-old Caldwell man was arrested after a pursuit that crossed several counties and ended in a crash near the Pocatello Airport.

The Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull over a vehicle at milepost 207 on Interstate 84 for speeding at around 1:53 p.m. Friday. The driver, identified as Justin Earl Clayborn of Calwell, sped away as officers approached.

Deputies chased Clayburn through the City of Heyburn, Rupert, back on to I-84 in Cassia County, the onto Interstate 86 into Power County. At times, deputies say speeds exceeded 115 miles per hour.

The chase ended on an exit ramp at Milepost 56 at the Pocatello Airport. The sheriff’s office said two deputies sustained minor injuries in separate crashes connected to the chase. A building next to the airport was damaged, along with three Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office vehicles. The deputies were treated for injuries at the scene.

Clayborn was arrested and booked into the Mini-Cassia Criminal Justice Center on charges of felony Eluding and Aggravated Assault.

All told, the chase involved Heyburn Police, Rupert Police, Idaho State Police, the Power County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Hall Tribal Police and emergency medical services from American Falls.
