U-Haul plans new use for Pocatello K-Mart

AMERCO Real Estate Company has won tentative approval for a conditional use permit (CUP) from the city of Pocatello to reuse the former K-Mart Building. The city’s planning and zoning commission held a public hearing on the proposal last week.

As it has at K-Mart stores across the country, U-Haul is looking to use the 96,005 square foot building at 3945 Pole Line Road for U-Haul truck and trailer sharing, indoor self-storage, and related retail sales. The site covers just short of 8 acres.

According to the company, most of the property would be used for self-service storage. The plan includes 600 self-service storage units ranging in size from 25 to 150 square feet. About 3,081 square feet will be for truck rentals.

Planning and Zoning commissioners approved the CUP on condition the company reviews options to ease traffic congestion on streets that also serve the new FBI Data Center.

Barring any new appeals, the approval takes effect November 30.
