Sheriff’s deputy shoots teen during traffic stop

A Bannock County sheriff’s deputy shot a teen after a traffic stop Friday night.

Authorities say it happened at about 9 p.m. in the area of Whitaker and Siphon Roads in Chubbuck.

According to the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, the officer initiated a traffic stop and the teen who was shot was a passenger in the car.

The Sheriff’s Office said the teen left the car and took off. The officer chased him and the chase ended in an altercation, during the deputy shot the teen.

The Sheriff’s Office did not say what the original traffic stop was for, only that it was a routine stop.

The teen who was shot was taken to Portneuf Medical Center with single gunshot wound. The Sheriff’s Office said he is still alive, but did not give details about his condition.

The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave.

The Sheriff’s Office said the 18-year-old driver of the car was detained for questioning. He was not arrested.

The shooting is being investigated by the East Idaho Critical Incident Team, which is being led by the Power County Sheriff’s Office.

No names have been released.
