Man runs from troopers after traffic stop now in custody
UPDATE: 5:31 A.M.
The suspect has been identified as Gustavo Chavez, 23, of Idaho Falls.
Chavez was charged with operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
He was in a 1995 Nissan pickup with passenger Jose Moreno, 19, of Shelley. Moreno was detained and arrested later.
Chavez and Moreno were in a 1995 Nissan pickup when an Idaho State Police trooper pulled them over in the southbound Blackfoot rest area of Interstate 15. Chavez ran away.
Moreno was detained and arrested later.
There was a firearm in the Nissan pickup.
Idaho State Police said deputies made contact with Chavez at N 150 W and West 1050 North in Bingham County. Chavez was found barricaded in a flatbed farm pickup. Officers and deputies attempted to talk him out of the vehicle for about two hours.
He was finally taken into custody at around 7:30 pm from the rear floorboard of the pickup, while laying under a blanket with a loaded firearm.
He was charged with a misdemeanor warrant, possession of methamphetamine, posseession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was also charged with resisting and obstructing a law enforcement officer, operating a motor vehicle wtihout consent, providing false information and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
UPDATE 5:42 P.M. 2/4/19: Law enforcement has the suspect in custody.
UPDATE 2/4/19 5:02 P.M.: Idaho State Police has a trooper searching for the man out in a lava bed.
They are also using a search dog and drones.
ORIGINAL STORY: Idaho State Police are searching for a man who started running after a traffic stop.
He looks to be in his 20s.
He is skinny and wearing jeans.
He was wearing a flannel shirt, but took it off while running.
He was wearing a white t-shirt underneath with a black logo on the front of it.
It happened around 4:30 p.m. at a rest area heading south at milepost 101 on I-15.
There is a warrant out for the man’s arrest.
There is no word on what the warrant is for.
Several officers are searching for the man.
There is no word yet on if the man is dangerous.
