Bison moved away from private land

UPDATE: Grand Teton National Park and Wyoming Game and Fish moved wild bison into areas of the park with better forage Friday. The bison are still in the road in some areas, although Highway 89 between Moose and Moran is now open.

Grand Teton National Park will temporarily close U.S. Highway 89 between Moose and Moran from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

The closure will help officials move a herd of about 100 bison to southern winter ranges.

Wyoming Game and Fish has been working with a private landowner and have made multiple attempts to haze bison away from his property. Multiple horses have been gored during the process.

According to park officials, bison can be difficult to move, especially in deep snow. Wildlife managers determined the best approach would be to use a section of plowed highway to steer the animals to natural forage several miles away.

Road crews will plow a portion of the Antelope Flats Road to facilitate movement of the herd if it travels that far south. The road will remain closed to vehicle travel.

The park’s road information line will be updated at 307-739-3682.
