Avalanche warning issued for Island Park region
The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center has issued an avalanche warning for the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone and the Centennial Range near Island Park.
The areas have received over two feet of snow and are sustaining strong southwest winds.
According to the center, thick drifts of snow will be easy to trigger and break naturally. Very large avalanches breaking at the base of the snowpack are possible.
Snowmobilers and skiers are urged to avoid all avalanche terrain and runout zones.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort reports 16 inches of snow fell over the last 24 hours and more was expected Tuesday. At the request of Grand Teton National Park and Teton County Search and Rescue, the resort has closed all back-country gates today. Openings will be delayed, as well, for avalanche mitigation.
Avalanche danger is described as high throughout the Bridger Teton National Forest area as well.
