The at-large suspect in a fatal shooting at an apartment complex near Utah Valley University has a history of drug-related offenses.
Online state court records show 19-year-old Elbert Paule was charged three times in the last year. He pleaded guilty in one case and served jail time and pleaded not guilty in another.
Orem Police Lt. Trent Colledge said Friday that Paule is considered the suspect because witnesses at the apartment complex saw him shoot a man Thursday night. Police aren’t yet identifying the man who died.
Colledge says Paule and the man knew each other. Colledge says it’s possible the shooting was drug related but that investigators are still gathering information.
The shooting spurred a shelter-in-place order for several hours at nearby Utah Valley University.

A man shot at an apartment complex near Utah Valley University south of Salt Lake City has died.
Orem Police tweeted Friday morning that the victim died, but didn’t provide any information about his identity. Officers are still searching for the suspect, 19-year-old Elbert Paule.
The Thursday night shooting at the apartment complex across Interstate 15 from the university triggered a shelter-in-place order for several hours at the college as police searched for the suspect.
Classes resumed as scheduled Friday morning, but the university tweeted that people should “continue to use caution.”
Orem Police Lt. Trent Colledge says the victim knew the shooter, but it’s unknown what led to the shooting.
Utah Valley University is a college of 40,000 students with a campus in Orem, Utah, located next to Interstate 15 in between businesses, shopping centers and housing.

Authorities are searching for a suspect in a shooting near Utah Valley University that left a man in critical condition and prompted the college to issue a shelter-in-place alert for two hours.
The university said Friday morning on Twitter that the campus was open following the Thursday night shutdown, that counseling services were available and that people should “continue to use caution.”
Police in the city of Orem south of Salt Lake City identified the suspect as 19-year-old Elbert Paule. He was last seen wearing yellow sweat pants and a dark sweatshirt.
The critically injured man was not identified and authorities did not disclose whether the two had any connection to Utah Valley University.
The shooting happened Thursday night at an apartment complex across Interstate 15 from the university.
