February snows fall near record levels

Now that books have closed on February snowfall, National Weather Service statistics prove it was a snowy month.

In Island Park, February 2019 snowfall totaled 109.9″ beating a record of 78″ set in 1979. That also makes it the third “snowiest” month of all time. Precipitation, which is different than snowpack, measured 8.31″ which is a new record for February and the third highest precipitation of any month of record-keeping.

February 2019 was also the snowiest February on record in Jackson and three inches short of being the second snowiest month on record. Records in Jackson have been kept since the winter of 1928-29. This winter season is also on track as being in the top 20 snowiest seasons on record in Jackson, with a couple of months still to go.

Here’s how the Jackson snowfall records stack up, according to the National Weather Service in Riverton:

1. January 1969 56″
2. February 2019 52.9″
3. January 1967 48.3″
4. December 2008 44.5″
5. February 1999 44″
