Transitioning developmental services from children to adults

The family of Cole Boldt spent nine months without an outside caregiver for their adult son with autism. Brion and Janet Boldt attempted to complete the paperwork for guardianship completely on their own but were ultimately unsuccessful. They eventually needed the aid of a professional attorney, Kevin Homer. In relation to the Boldt family’s struggles, Homer said, “The reason why it was so complicated was that the system is complicated. And, frankly, it is getting more complicated instead of less, unfortunately. There isn’t a resource out there in the community or the legal system where people can go to find out how to do it yourself.” The family hoped to help inform others that may be in the same situation that they previously endured. Professional help like Homer encourages others to start the process of gaining guardianship with aid around six months before their eighteenth birthday. Due to the experience, Brion Boldt now holds a free weekly counseling group at 12:30 pm on Wednesdays at 615 Hoopes Avenue Idaho Falls for parents and caregivers involved with someone with disabilities. Homer also holds an open door policy for a free consultation for anyone possibly in the same position as the Boldt family. People may either call Homer at (208) 523-9151 or walk into his office at 1565 South Boulevard Idaho Falls to converse with him.
