Idaho Falls Fiber performs city’s first residential fiber hookup

History was made in Idaho Falls this week. Residents of the city got fiber internet service at their homes for the first time through the Idaho Falls Residential Pilot Program.

Fiber lines are thin strands of glass that stretch and conduct light to carry data, making it one of the fastest methods for data delivery.

Andrew and Katy Melton were set up with the service Wednesday and said they can already see a difference in their internet speed.

“How fast everything loads (is a big difference),” said Andrew Melton. “I do a little video gaming and stuff like that. With the latency, it really makes my ping in games a lot better, so that runs way smoother.”

People living in two of the three pilot areas can now access the Idaho Falls Fiber website to sign up for the network.

The fiber optic network is available in the Carriage Gate area, the South Park area and the Stonebrook area.
