Shelley man knows he can dance

20-year-old Luke Phillips doesn’t think he can dance, he knows he can.

For the past 8 years, he’s dedicated his life to dancing and now he’s going to put his talents to the test on ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’

But Phillips hasn’t always been a dancer.

“When I was younger, I actually watched my sister do drill team, and I was like doing baseball, soccer, flag-football and nothing really clicked and never really found a passion for it,” he explained.

Watching his sister made him want to take a chance, so he did.

Since then things his drive and commitment have only gotten stronger.

“I went from maybe taking one dance class a week, like a hip hop for like a year, and then after that, I started training more intensely and dancing like four or five times a week to eventually dancing thirty hours a week,” Phillips said.

For his senior project, Phillips choreographed the dance, band and cheer for homecoming, all while managing other commitments and training.

Just last year he turned professional and now he faces his biggest stage yet, ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’

After submitting a tape, Phillips went through several stages of auditions before finally getting in front of the judges.

“Basically, I went off of what I thought would best represent me well, and was strongest for my talents and what I have, so I just tried to showcase what I was best at so it made it pretty easy.”

Phillips said choreographing a dance can take anywhere from 6 hours two weeks. But the dance is refined through hours of practice and finishes with cleaning.

“That’s when you go through each set of eight, count by count, picking specifically where you want the picture to be, so that’s essentially all your dance is,” Phillips said, “a bunch of different moving pictures.”

Although contractual agreements prevent Phillips from revealing too much about his experience, he said it was amazing and very positive.

“I was really surprised by what the judges said and it was really good and the people made it fun, they were great to work with.”

So what exactly did the judges have to say about his performance? You’ll have to tune in to find out

It is not clear exactly which episode Phillips will appear in but he believes it could be the season 16 premiere which airs, Monday at 8 p.m. on Fox.
