Calling the dig line before you dig a hole can save you from having your neighbors evacuated

With the warmer weather, many people are working on summer home projects. If your project includes any amount of digging, there is a number you need to call before you begin.

Calling 8-1-1 will connect you to the Dig Line where you can request a specialist to come out before you dig to mark the areas where there are important lines, like gas lines.

Hitting a gas line while digging is a huge risk for yourself and your neighbors, so to prevent that, it’s important you make the call beforehand. If you do cause a gas leak, your neighbors may be evacuated as a safety precaution.

“Before you dig you need to call, find out where all the lines are, they’ll come and put little flags in and then you can dig and are safe to go from there,” said officer Wellard from the Idaho Falls Police Department.

There have been many incidents of gas leaks in the area the last few weeks, and luckily no one has been injured.

Having specialists come out and mark the areas for you is a completely free service.
