Bonneville County Fair holds new, sweet competition

Bring out the mixers and find your best cupcake recipe. It was a battle for the sweetest treats on the final day of the Bonneville County Fair on Thursday.

“Cupcakes Wars was a brand-new competition this year,” said Alaena Ruth, the extension educator for the 4-H Youth Development.

Twelve teams of two 4-H members competed head to head to see whose cupcakes reign supreme.

“We have caramel corn cupcakes,” said 9-year old, Leanne.

“We decided to do a chocolate,” said 10-year-old Gracie.

Bakers had to tie their treats into this year’s very fitting, theme, “A Day at the Fair.”

“We also did green (frosting) because that is the color of 4-H.” Gracie said.

The teams had an hour and 30 minutes to complete their cupcakes. However, the junior bakers were ready-well before Thursday’s big competition.

“We first did it to get familiar with the recipe, then we had a timer, then we did it without an adult helping us,” Leanne said.

The practice also helped the teams go through some trial and error.

“We tried a different recipe, but it turned out so big that it went over the pan,” said Gracie’s teammate, Rilee.

No matter the amount of time spent practicing, it all came down to what went happened in the kitchen Thursday.

“We were at a good pace,” Rilee said.

“We put more butter in the pan so it doesn’t stick on the pan,” Gracie added.

The competition was not just about who had the best cupcakes, it was also about learning useful life skills.

“They get to work as a team, which is really important in 4-H,” Ruth said. “You name it, 4-H can do it.”

But the best part for the junior bakers?

“Eating the food after,” said Leanne’s teammate, Emily.
