Details released on Jefferson County officer-involved shooting

UPDATE 9/6/19 1:20 p.m. The Eastern Idaho Critical Incident team is continuing its investigation into the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday at 4474 E. 200 N. in Jefferson County.

The Rexburg Police Department has taken the lead in the investigation and has eight agencies assisting.

The suspect has been identified as 53-year-old Michael E. Robbins.

An autopsy was conducted on Robbins at the Ada County Coroner’s office on Thursday. Results from the autopsy are pending and unavailable at this time.

Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson requested the assistance of the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office tactical team during the incident.

Bonneville County Sheriff’s Sergeant Tony Glenn has been identified as the deputy that fired the shots during the time Robbins was firing gunshots at the tactical team.

Per protocol, Sgt. Glenn has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Sheriff Anderson would like to thank all the surrounding law enforcement agencies involved during this difficult time.

UPDATE 11:09 a.m.: A 53-year-old man was killed after a night-long showdown with police in Jefferson County.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was called at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday to 4474 E. 200 N. on a domestic disturbance call. The man had pointed a handgun at his wife and threatened to shoot her. The woman fled the scene.

When officers arrived, the man barricaded himself in the house and shouted out the window at officers. According to authorities, he made threats against the officers and refused to come out of the house.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office tactical team was called to assist. The Sheriff’s Office said nearby residents were evacuated.

Negotiations continued for about 7 hours until the suspect fired on officers at around 4:16 a.m. Wednesday. Officers shot and killed the suspect. There were no other injuries.

The names of those involved have not been released.

The Southeast Idaho Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident. That team includes ISP, Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, Bingham County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho Falls Police Dept., Blackfoot Police Dept., Chubbuck Police Dept., Teton County Sheriff’s Office, Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and Rexburg Police Dept.

An autopsy of the suspect was expected to be conducted on Thursday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is on the scene of a shooting incident northwest of Ririe.

A neighbor said officers were involved with a standoff at the home that lasted through the night.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has not released any information about the incident.
