Soldier arrives just in time for son’s birth

TOWSON, Maryland (WBAL) — A U.S. Army soldier got home to Maryland just in time for the birth of his son.
Pvt. Tyrell Hicks obtained leave from Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and was able to get home just in time to witness the birth of his third child at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center.
The hospital organized an honor walk in which labor and deliver staff members lined the hallway with signs and clapped as Hicks arrived.
“It’s a blessing to be here,” Hicks said in a statement.
Hicks credited his drill sergeant, his fellow troops and — perhaps most importantly — the pilot, all of whom helped to get him to his laboring wife, Alanna Hicks.
“I prayed and prayed that I’d be here on time,” Hicks said.
Hicks said he was appreciative of people who appreciate his service to his country and made his trip home happen. But no one was more happy than his wife, who said his being there “made my day.”
Baby boy Kannon arrived just after his father’s surprise homecoming at 1:15 p.m. Friday, weighing in at a healthy 9 pounds 6 ounces.
