Driver of fatal crash on US 20 arrested

Accident blocks US 20 near Rigby Friday afternoon.

RIGBY, Idaho (KIFI) - UPDATE8/21/23: Police say the 19-year-old Honda driver from Mattawa, Washington, was arrested for felony vehicular manslaughter.

A warrant request was filed with the Jefferson County Prosecutor's office and was issued for Alonso Hernandez Garcia's arrest by the Jefferson County Court.

After being released from medical treatment, the warrant was served, and he was booked into the Jefferson County Jail.


UPDATE 7:30 p.m. A 22-year-old Rexburg man was killed in a crash Friday at approximately 12:35 p.m. on US 20 near milepost 320 in Jefferson County.

According to ISP, a Honda Accord, driven by a 19-year-old Mattawa, Washington man was traveling eastbound on US 20 near mile post 320 when he lost control of his vehicle, drove through the median, into westbound traffic and struck a Nissan Murano head-on. The Nissan was driven by a 22-year-old Rexburg man who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The passenger of the Nissan, a 24-year-old Rigby woman was transported via ground to a local hospital.

All occupants were wearing seat belts.

The crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police.


ORIGINAL: Multiple accidents are blocking US 20 west of Rigby causing a traffic backup.

One accident on the southbound lanes at milepost 320 involves a number of victims. A medical helicopter was called to the accident scene.

Another accident involving two cars on the eastbound lanes is blocking one lane.

You may want to avoid this area until the accidents are cleaned up. It's unknown how long that will be.
