Forest Service continues to contain Hayden Fire
SALMON, Idaho (KIFI) - A month after the Hayden Fire sparked to life near Leadore, the blaze is back under the watchful eye of the Salmon-Challis National Forest.
According to fire management officer Eric Platz, he fire is contained, and all fire restrictions as well as evacuation zones have been lifted.
"The last time we flew it, it's just smoldering some interior trees and heavies that are still burning, but it hasn't moved outside of its last footprint since, especially since the rain that we recently received," Platz said.
He said the heavy rains are unusual for this time of the year, and those downpours were instrumental to bringing the blaze under control."
"We got well over an inch and a half of rain on the fire area itself," Platz said. "And it's really dampened any fire movement or anything beyond just smoldering logs still burning in there right now. So it's helped out tremendously.”
Platz said any extreme heat waves could cause the fire to pick back up, but for now, the forest service team is on patrol assessing the fire damage and containment lines.
"They look at the severity of the burn areas. What we can do for any further rehab are we already haven't done and they've already done those assessments and we're just waiting on reports to see what needs to happen further of any of those areas that would need to have anything further done to them to help out.”
