Mountain lion sightings increase in Idaho and Utah
KETCHUM, Idaho (KIFI) - Several mountain lion sightings have been reported in Idaho and Utah lately.
Two young mountain lions have been seen roaming yards and driveways in Ketchum. Idaho Fish and Game has received almost 20 calls about mountain lions in the Wood River Valley so far this year.
In January, Idaho Fish and Game trapped and killed a mountain lion that was apparently killing chickens, ducks, geese and a house cat at a home in Hailey.
Later that month in East Fork, two dogs were saved by their owners from an attacking mountain lion.
A couple in Logan, Utah, found a mountain lion in their backyard. Officers tranquilized and removed the animal.
Fish and Game shared in a news release what people should do if they come in contact with a mountain lion.
- Never run away from a mountain lion. The lion’s instinct is to chase and ultimately catch what it perceives as potential prey.
- Never turn your back on a lion. Always face it while making yourself look as large as you can. Yell loudly, but don’t scream. A high-pitched scream may mimic the sound of a wounded animal.
- Slowly back away while maintaining eye contact with the lion.
- When walking or hiking, carry safety equipment like a canister of bear spray or a noise device like an air-horn. If you walk in the dark, bring a very bright flashlight.
- If you are attacked, fight back.
If people see a mountain lion, they need to report it to the police or Idaho Fish and Game immediately. The longer people wait to report a sighting, the harder it will be for authorities to find the animal.
