Avalanche danger has dropped for now

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - The current avalanche risk across the region has fallen considerably in the last week. The Centennial Mountains across Island Park have a considerable risk of avalanches. The Sawtooth and Teton Mountains only have a moderate risk.

This comes after a very active avalanche season. Experts with the Sawtooth Avalanche Center have told us they have received more reports of avalanches than what they typically receive. hey have gotten 481 reports of avalanches within the Sawtooth mountains since last October. They have still received reports of 4 avalanches in the past five days.

The avalanche risk is expected to increase within the next few weeks despite spring being on the horizon. Experts warn us the rapid warm up will cause the snow to melt. When the snowpack first starts to melt, they have warned us of more erratic and unpredictable avalanches that occur following that span of time.
