Man dies after multi-vehicle collision on I-86

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) - UPDATE 11/30/23: Police report a 66-year-old American Falls man who was transported to a local hospital and transferred to Utah for medical attention has succumbed to his injuries.

A medical examiner who will determine the cause and manner of death will release the man's identity.

At this time, Idaho State Police troopers continue investigating the circumstances around the incident. Due to the nature and scope of the event, it will take time to analyze all the evidence


UPDATE 4:00 p.m. Multiple people were hospitalized following a multi-vehicle collision Monday at approximately 8:00 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 86, near milepost 56, west of Pocatello.

According to Idaho State Police, a thick layer of fog covered the interstate causing limited visibility in a short amount of time. Due to the fog, vehicles slowed down suddenly. Commercial and personal vehicles collided with one another causing a chain reaction of approximately thirty vehicles.

Minor injuries were reported with one person being transported to a local hospital via ground ambulance, and several others transported by personal vehicles.

Interstate 86 was blocked for approximately seven hours to allow emergency personnel and tow trucks to assist those involved and clear the scene.

This incident remains under investigation by the Idaho State police.


ORIGINAL: Several semis were involved in a multi-vehicle crash on I-86 west of Pocatello Monday morning.

Traffic is being diverted around the accident at the Pocatello airport exit to the Simplot exit until emergency crews can clear the interstate.

The accident happened on the eastbound lanes of the highway between the Pocatello airport and the Simplot plant.

Dense fog was reported in the area at the time of the accident and may have contributed to the crash.
