New landfill facility coming soon to Madison County

REXBURG, IDAHO (KIFI) - The Eastern Idaho Solid Waste District is starting to put preparations together for a brand new landfill area. It will be located east of Rexburg and just south of Newdale along Longhallow road.

The solid waste district is receiving $18 million from The US Department of Agriculture Rural Development to complete this project. The district has worked with both the Idaho Department of Lands and the Department of Environmental Quality to secure the location.

The site will be 1,000 acres and is located outside of the growth area expected for Rexburg in the next 100 years.

“The USDA-RD will help the District reduce financing costs and better serve Eastern Idaho citizens,” said Cameron Arial, President of Clearwater Financial, the District’s financial advisor. “Eventually the Facility will be self-sustaining through tipping fees. For now, this funding package will reduce early debt service payments and allow more funds to go towards facility needs.”
