Flags in Idaho to fly at half-staff to honor late military leader Maj. Gen. Darrell Manning

BOISE, Idaho (KIFI) — Gov. Brad Little announced the death of Maj. Gen. Darrell Manning on Friday, remembering the longtime military and public servant as a dedicated Idaho leader whose influence spanned decades.

Little also directed that U.S. and Idaho flags at all state buildings be flown at half-staff from sunrise Sept. 2 through sunset Sept. 4 in Manning's honor.

According to the governor's office, Manning served as Idaho's adjutant general and commander of the Idaho National Guard from 1985 to 1995, helping modernize the state's military forces and strengthen training capabilities. A 41-year military veteran, he retired in 1995 as Idaho's senior military official.

Beyond his military career, Manning served in the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Idaho National Guard, flew more than 65 types of aircraft, and represented Idaho in both the House and Senate. He also led several state agencies and boards, including the Idaho Transportation Department, Department of Health and Welfare, Military Division and Bureau of Disaster Services.

"Idaho has been extraordinarily blessed by the unparalleled service of General Darrell Manning," Little said in a statement, praising his decades of leadership and counsel to governors across multiple administrations.

Current Idaho Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Timothy Donnellan said Manning's impact on the Idaho National Guard remains evident today.

"General Manning devoted his life to serving Idaho and our nation, and his impact on the Idaho National Guard is immeasurable," Donnellan said.
