Gusty, Hazy Monday with cooler, wetter weather to follow

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI)- Southeast Idaho is facing poor air quality from wildfire smoke and high temperatures in the 90s through Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Central Mountains Sunday due to low relative humidity and breezy winds.

The smoke is affecting air quality across the region, with a specific advisory remaining in effect for Custer County. Patchy smoke to remain in the forecast through at least Monday evening. Hot and dry conditions will persist for the next two days before a cooler, wetter weather pattern arrives mid-week.

High temperatures to reach 93 on Monday. While the heat remains intense for the early part of the week, triple-digit temperatures have likely ended for the season. Low-elevation highs are expected to stay in the 90s through Tuesday before a transition begins.

Winds are expected to increase Monday afternoon, with gusts reaching as high as 30 mph. These winds, combined with low relative humidity, have prompted the Red Flag Warning for the Central Mountains, which is likely to continue through Monday.

A significant weather pattern change is expected to begin on Wednesday. This transition will bring cooler and wetter conditions to the region through the following weekend. High temperatures on Wednesday are expected to drop to near 87 as the cooling trend begins.

A 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms is forecast for Thursday afternoon. High temperatures are expected to fall well below normal from Thursday through Sunday, with most areas seeing highs in the 70s and 80s. Some mountain locations may see temperatures drop into the 60s during this period.
