Showers and thunderstorms to continue through the weekend

KIFI

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI)- A slight risk for severe weather has shifted south into northern Utah. The strongest storms could bring isolated damaging wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph, along with hail around the size of quarters.

A cold front moving through the Central Mountains is helping fuel showers and thunderstorms across the Snake River Plain and Eastern Highlands. Forecast models show the rain and storms hanging around through early Sunday morning, followed by a quick clearing trend Sunday afternoon.

For Saturday night, there’s a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight. Skies will stay mostly cloudy, with overnight temperatures dropping to around 52 degrees. South winds will blow at 7 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching up to 24 mph.

Sunday morning starts with a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 a.m. After that, skies should clear out and turn sunny, with a high near 72 degrees. South-southwest winds will run 9 to 18 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph.

Sunday night looks mostly clear, with a low around 44 degrees and wind gusts as high as 26 mph.

Temperatures will start to warm up a bit early next week, bringing lower-elevation highs closer to normal for this time of year, generally in the upper 70s and low 80s. Monday’s high is expected to reach around 79 degrees, followed by about 80 degrees on Tuesday.

There’s still a chance for a few showers and thunderstorms Monday night through Tuesday night as a weak trough moves across the area. For the rest of the week, highs should stay in the mid-70s, with overnight lows generally in the 40s and 50s.
