Chilly Sunday night gives way to warmer Monday temperatures

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI)- Clear skies and light winds will bring a chilly Sunday night to the region, with overnight low temperatures dropping into the 40s in lower elevation valleys and the 30s across high country basins. Sunny and warmer conditions will return on Monday, as high temperatures reach near 81 degrees after a low around 45 degrees overnight.

The chilly Sunday night follows a breezy afternoon across the area, where wind gusts reached 25 to 35 mph across the Arco Desert and the Snake River Plain. High temperatures on Sunday were the coolest expected for the next several days, reaching the upper 60s to mid-70s.

High temperatures will warm up on Monday and Tuesday, with highs ranging between 75 and 85 degrees across the region. Monday will stay mostly sunny and dry during the day, with light and variable winds becoming north-northwest around five mph in the afternoon.

A weak shortwave trough moving through the region will bring a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms starting late Monday night, mainly after 5 a.m., and continuing into Tuesday. The chance of rain remains at 50% for Tuesday, with showers primarily expected before noon before tapering to a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Low temperatures on both Monday night and Tuesday night will hold around 53 degrees.

A cold front passing through on Wednesday will drop high temperatures back into the mid-70s for Wednesday and Thursday, while bringing afternoon wind gusts back up to 25 to 35 mph. Temperatures are expected to return to the low 80s on Friday and Saturday under sunny skies.
