Rain chances return Sunday night after brief warmup

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI)- Warmer conditions Sunday as high temperatures rise to near 74 degrees under partly sunny skies. The brief weekend warmup comes after temperatures dropped about 10 degrees from Friday, though rain chances return late Sunday night.

A weather trough positioned over the Pacific Northwest brought cooler temperatures and breezy conditions to the region following an overnight frontal passage. Isolated to scattered showers and storms remain possible from Saturday night through Monday, with overnight low temperatures holding around 48 degrees for both Saturday night and Sunday night.

Sunday will start with partly sunny skies and light, variable winds that shift southwest at around six mph by morning. As Sunday night approaches, skies will turn mostly cloudy with an overnight low around 48 degrees. Winds will transition to the east at around five mph, bringing a 30% chance of precipitation with a slight chance of rain before 2 a.m. and a higher chance after 3 a.m.

The weekend shift follows a cooler Saturday across East Idaho, where high temperatures dropped approximately 10 degrees from Friday following an overnight frontal passage. Saturday night brings mostly cloudy skies with a low near 48 degrees and southwest winds between five and nine mph, though gusts could reach as high as 18 mph before winds calm after midnight. High-resolution forecast models indicated a potential for afternoon sprinkles and brief light showers overnight in parts of the eastern highlands.

Looking ahead to the start of the workweek, Monday will feature mostly sunny conditions with high temperatures cooling back down to near 68 degrees. Winds on Monday morning will blow from the southeast at five to seven mph before switching to the west-southwest in the afternoon. Clearer weather takes hold Monday night with a low around 43 degrees, leading into a stretch of sunny days with highs near 68 degrees on Tuesday, 71 on Wednesday and 72 on Thursday.
