Thunderstorms target the area overnight before a warming trend arrives

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI)- Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected along the I-15 corridor and Eastern Highlands on Sunday night. Skies will clear on Monday, bringing a daytime high near 68 degrees.

An upper-level trough pushing through eastern Idaho is driving the brief wave of cloud cover and overnight precipitation. The system will exit rapidly Monday morning, dropping valley temperatures roughly 10 degrees compared to Sunday.

Dry conditions will set in shortly after the system leaves, followed by a warming trend that begins Wednesday as high pressure builds over the Intermountain West. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-to-upper 70s by late week.

Rain chances begin after midnight Sunday with a 50% chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms. Overnight temperatures will drop to a low around 48 degrees with winds shifting from south-southwest to east. A 20% chance of rain lingers before 9 a.m. Monday before skies gradually clear, bringing afternoon highs near 68 degrees with west-southwest winds around five to seven mph.

Sunny skies and calm conditions return Tuesday with a high near 69 degrees. High pressure will begin organizing over the Southwestern U.S. before building directly over the Intermountain West on Wednesday. This high pressure system will keep atmospheric moisture away from eastern Idaho, ensuring zero chance of rain across the region from Tuesday through Saturday.

Along with the dry stretch, daytime temperatures will gradually climb through late week. Valleys will see highs reach 70 degrees on Wednesday, 72 degrees on Thursday and 75 degrees on Friday, with mostly sunny conditions persisting into Saturday.
