ITD recognizes death of subcontractor in I-84 work zone in Jerome County
BOISE, Idaho (KIFI) — UPDATE 10/3/23: Last week the Idaho Transportation Department recognized the death of a worker in a construction zone on I-84 in Jerome County.
The worker died Sept. 23 and was employed by Road Work Ahead, a subcontractor hired to provide traffic control for the ongoing replacement of the Kimberly Interchange east of Twin Falls.
The worker was not employed by ITD.
ORIGINAL: Police are investigating a semi-truck versus pedestrian crash that occurred Saturday, Sept.23, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. on Interstate 84 at milepost 183 in Jerome County.
According to police, a 75-year-old Anaheim, CA, man was driving a 2021 Freightliner semi-truck westbound on Interstate 84 when he drove into a closed lane of travel in the construction zone. The semi-truck drove through multiple traffic control devices before striking a 22-year-old pedestrian from Filer. The semi-truck continued westbound striking a 2022 Ford Ranger where it came to rest.
The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the semi-truck was wearing a seat belt.
The westbound 182 exit was closed for approximately five and a half hours while crews cleared the crash scene.
This incident remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
