1 woman dead after late-night shooting in Rexburg

REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI) - (Updated at 4:56 p.m.) The following is a press release from the Rexburg Police Department: "On August 22, 2024 at approximately 11:16 p.m., Officers from the Rexburg Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Lilac Street located in the Mill Hollow neighborhood in Rexburg.

Upon arrival, police located one adult male who was later identified as 32-year-old Fabian Hernandez of Rexburg. Hernandez was then taken into custody at that location, without incident. Officers located an adult female later identified to be 35-year-old Ariana Ramos Chavez of Rexburg, with multiple gunshot wounds. Immediate life-saving measures were administered by responding officers and emergency medical personnel. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, Chavez was pronounced deceased at the scene.

During the course of the investigation, it was found that Chavez and Hernandez lived at the residence and were in a domestic partnership. An argument ensued in the residence which continued to escalate. Chavez and Hernandez exited the residence at which point Hernandez allegedly shot Chavez multiple times.

Hernandez is currently being held in the Madison County Jail on the following charges: (1) FELONY count of 1st Degree Murder, (1) FELONY count of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine), (1) Misdemeanor count of Possession of Paraphernalia.

This was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. This investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available at this time. Hernandez is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Rexburg Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time."

(5:06 a.m.) One woman is dead and a suspect is in custody after a late-night shooting in Rexburg.

Rexburg Police Officers responded to a call saying shots were fired around Lilac Street in the Mill Hollow neighborhood around 11:15 Thursday night.

When they arrived, police took a male suspect into custody without incident and found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds. They tried to give her emergency medical attention, but the female died at the scene.

There is no ongoing threat to the public.

Police are still investigating and ask you to avoid the area for the time being.
