Protesters storm Mexico’s Senate after ruling party wins votes for court overhaul

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hundreds of protesters pushed into Mexico’s Senate as lawmakers weighed a contentious plan to overhaul the country’s judiciary, forcing the body to temporarily suspend its session. The shutdown Tuesday came just hours after the Morena ruling party appeared to have wrangled the votes it needed to jam through the proposed overhaul after at least one member of an opposition party was accused of flipping to support it. The overhaul championed by outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has fueled weeks of protests by judicial employees and law students. Critics say the plan that would have all judges elected would undermine checks and balances. A Senate vote was expected Wednesday.
