New Orleans wants to end federal oversight of its police. Critics aren’t convinced

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department and the city of New Orleans are pushing to end more than a decade of federal oversight of the police department. But most members of the public urged a federal judge on Tuesday to maintain the oversight. Activists point to lackluster police efforts at community engagement, poor handling of sex crimes and racial disparities in the use of force. One of the federal monitors formed a nonprofit and hired former New Orleans police leaders to help monitor Minneapolis police in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Critics say the reform in New Orleans is hardly a success story to replicate.
