Decisive two-point conversion leads Blackfoot past Shelley

SHELLEY, Idaho (KIFI) – The Blackfoot Broncos defeated the Shelley Russets eight-seven in a conference football matchup in Shelley. The game's only two touchdowns—one by each team—were accompanied by a decisive two-point conversion that secured the one-point victory for Blackfoot.

Shelley took an early lead in the second quarter before Blackfoot answered late in the half with a touchdown and two-point conversion. The Russets last defeated the Broncos on Sept. 15, 2023.

Shelley opened the scoring in the second quarter after being backed up on its own nine-yard line. Lining up in the T formation, Kyrev Hawker took a handoff from Alex Beck and broke through the defense, slipped two tackles, dodged a third defender and ran for a 91-yard rushing touchdown to give the Russets a 7-0 lead.

Blackfoot halted Shelley's next offensive opportunity when McCoy Remington, playing in place of Alex Beck after he went down with an apparent injury which he later returned from, attempted a pass. Keaton Shoaf intercepted Remington's throw to stop the Russets' drive and return possession to the Broncos.

With time winding down in the first half, Blackfoot converted on a fourth-and-13 play when Parker Wright completed a jump throw to Briggs Esplin, who was pushed out of bounds at the one-yard line. On the very next play, Blackfoot tossed the ball to Esplin for a touchdown. The Broncos then converted what was the game-winning two-point conversion when Mason Taylor went up the gut and over the goal line.

Shelley plays Idaho Falls at Ravsten Stadium next on August 28th. Blackfoot will head back home and welcome new conference opponent Century also on August 28th.
