Sugar-Salem shuts out rival Shelley High School in dominant win

The Sugar-Salem High School Diggers earned a 41-0 victory against rival Shelley High School in a road game hosted by the Russets. Defense ruled the early portion of the rivalry contest before Sugar-Salem took full control.


Early defense set the tone for both teams as Shelley punted following its opening possession. Sugar-Salem took over with strong field position deep in Shelley territory, but the initial drives failed to produce points, keeping the game scoreless through the opening exchanges.


Sugar-Salem player Walter Fillmore provided early momentum on special teams by returning a Shelley punt across midfield. Fillmore found space on the return and lowered his shoulder to reach near the 40-yard line. On the ensuing drive, Sugar-Salem quarterback Frank Fillmore ran up the middle on a quarterback keeper for a big gain and a first down before the drive stalled.

Shelley responded on its next drive when facing a fourth-and-short situation. Russets quarterback Alex Beck executed a quarterback sneak, emerging from a pile of defenders and carrying Sugar-Salem tacklers to convert a key first down. Later in the same drive, Beck completed a quick pass to Aiden Carlson, but Sugar-Salem player Adriane Williams stopped the play with an open-field tackle.

Sugar-Salem regained momentum on offense while the game remained scoreless. Frank Fillmore rolled to his right on a subsequent possession before cutting upfield to gain another Diggers first down, helping Sugar-Salem break the game open on the way to the 41-0 victory.
