Tracking freezing temps for the morning and temps hitting the 50’s today
Freeze warning in effect through 9am for most of the Snake River plain. Temps in the mid 20's. And clearing begins for us with some fog possible with mainly sunshine by this afternoon. Highs today above 50, to the mid 50's and around 56 in Idaho Falls. Still short of average temps for this time of the year, but we'll get there tomorrow with highs and sunshine into the 60's and closer to 70 by Friday and Saturday.
A cold start across Eastern Idaho this morning, with a Freeze Warning in effect through 9 AM for much of the Snake River Plain. Temperatures have dropped into the mid-20s, so sensitive plants, gardens, and outdoor vegetation are vulnerable to freezing conditions. If you still have plants outside, bring them in or cover them up until temperatures climb above freezing.
What to wear this morning: Winter isn't here just yet, but it certainly feels like it! Grab a warm coat, gloves, and perhaps a hat if you're heading out early. You'll want those extra layers for the school drop-off, dog walk, or morning commute. Don't forget to protect any sensitive plants before heading out the door.
We'll gradually clear out this morning, although a few areas of fog may develop before sunshine takes over this afternoon. Highs will climb into the lower to middle 50s, reaching around 56 degrees in Idaho Falls. That's a noticeable improvement from our chilly morning start, but we're still running below average for mid-October.
What to wear this afternoon: Once the sun gets higher, it will feel much better. A long-sleeve shirt, jeans, and a light jacket should do the trick for most outdoor activities. You may be comfortable shedding that heavier coat during the warmest part of the afternoon, but keep a layer handy for shaded areas and cooler breezes. If you're spending time outside, sunglasses will be useful once the sunshine breaks through.
The bigger change arrives tomorrow as sunshine continues and temperatures climb into the 60s. By Friday and Saturday, we're looking at highs approaching 70 degrees in many communities. That means a much more comfortable afternoon for outdoor chores, walking the dog, enjoying the fall colors, or getting outside before cooler weather returns.
Planning for the next few days: Tomorrow, a light jacket should be enough for much of the afternoon, although you'll still want warmer layers early in the day. By Friday and Saturday, lighter fall clothing should be comfortable in the sunshine, with a hoodie or jacket ready for chilly mornings and evenings. Remember, clear skies can allow temperatures to drop quickly after sunset.
The takeaway: Bundle up for the morning, dress in layers for the afternoon, and keep that jacket close for the evening. After a frosty start, sunshine and a warming trend will bring increasingly comfortable fall weather to Eastern Idaho through the end of the week.
