Shelley Russets take a 17-14 victory over the Bonneville Bees

KIFI

SHELLEY, Idaho (KIFI) – The Shelley Russets held on to defeat the Bonneville Bees 17-14 in a crucial 5A High Country Conference match-up. A blocked field goal that Shelley returned for a touchdown in the third quarter provided the Russets with a big spark.

Coming out of halftime of this game, Shelley was ahead 3-0. They had the ball first in the third quarter, but the Bees forced a punt. Bonneville's offense worked their way into field goal range with the help of some big chunk plays. QB Jaxton Briggs found Ryan Flynn early in the drive, and then Kemper Allen later for big gains. The drive stalled, so the Bees elected to go for the field goal and attempt to tie the game at 3.

The Shelley special teams unit blocked the attempt. The ball took a perfect hop into the hands of Kyrev Hawker, and he ran it all the way back for a Russet touchdown and a 10-0 lead. The Bees came back right after that negative play and found the end zone.

Briggs found his wide receiver Kaine Rodriguez for a big chunk play to get the offense in striking distance. Then three plays later Briggs went to Rodriguez again, this time down the Bonneville sideline. Rodriguez made the catch, shook off a defender, and ran in for the touchdown, making it 10-7 Shelley.

The Russets held on and took the win 17-14, taking a huge step toward making the 5A state playoffs. Shelley will end their regular season October 23rd at Skyline, and the Bees will wrap things up that same day against the Idaho Falls Tigers.
