Custer County campground shooting investigation continues
CUSTER COUNTY, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - UPDATE: The Custer County Sheriff’s Office has released additional information about a law enforcement officer-involved shooting incident August 1 at the Tin Cup Campground.
A man, now identified as Russell Liddell, 73, of Boise confronted a group of people camped there. He was not part of the group and was not known to the campers.
Liddell got into a verbal altercation of some members of the group, ending with shots being fired. One member of the group was off-duty Bonners Ferry Police Chief Brian Zimmerman.Â
Zimmerman fired rounds that struck and killed Liddell. Detectives said members of the group began administering life-saving measures to Liddell and traveled to a location with enough cell phone service to call 911.Â
No other individuals were hurt.
Upon arrival at the scene, Custer County Deputies requested resources from the Eastern Idaho Critical Task Force to assist in the investigation.
Detectives from Bonneville, Bingham, and Fremont County Sheriff’s Offices, Idaho Falls Police Department, and Idaho State Police responded and have been collecting witness information and evidence.
Autopsy results have not been completed.

Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force members are investigating a shooting that involved an off-duty officer over the weekend.
The following is preliminary pending an ongoing investigation.
On Saturday at 10:30 p.m., a shooting was reported at a backcountry campground in Custer County.
Witnesses report a group of about 16 to 18 people were camping when an individual unknown to them entered their camp.
An altercation began resulting in shots fired.
Officials report one person is deceased.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force.
The Bonneville County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the Bingham and Fremont County Sheriff's Offices, the Idaho Falls Police Department and the Idaho State Police.
