Estimate: More Than Half Of Idaho Wolves Killed

More than half the wolves in Idaho were killed in the recent hunting season, according to numbers from the Idaho Fish and Game.

By some estimates, the Gem State had 745 wolves when the season began Aug. 30. By March 31, when the season ended for most of the state, 252 wolves were harvested by firearm and 123 by trapping.

There are 66 unfilled tags in the remaining hunting zones. The season ends June 30 in the Lolo and Selway zones and ends Dec. 31 in the Island Park and Beaverhead zones. All trapping seasons closed March 31, except for a few units in the Panhandle and Dworshak-Elk City regions.

Hunters may buy two tags per calendar year.
