Job Outlook Bright For New Grads

Commencement ceremonies for Idaho State University and the University of Idaho are just around the corner, and while economists say the job outlook for new graduates is competitive, it is also optimistic.

“Really, I’m excited to get out of school. I’m excited for the opportunities,” said Kevin Nielson, a junior at Idaho State University.

Nielson might not be turning his tassel until next May, but even this chemistry major is looking forward to entering the workforce.

“I’ve been trying to get internships, which are very important,” said Nielson. “I’ve been applying out at the INL and sending my resume out. I’ve been trying to get work experience before I actually get my degree.”

In the eyes of the Idaho Department of Labor officials, Nielson is doing what every upcoming graduate should. Getting an early start. Statistics show that the average number of applicants per job in 2011 was about 33 people.

“There’s room for improvement but they’re better off here than they would be if they were graduating from say Nevada or Michigan or a place like that,” said Will Jenson, regional economist.

Some graduates might have an easier time landing a job, though. Engineering, business and accounting majors have the highest prospects.

New grads should be confident though. A study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers shows that employers plan to hire 10.2 percent more new graduates this year than last year.
