Man Gets 10 Years To Life In Idaho Falls Killing
A convicted murderer has been sentenced to 10 years to life in prison.
“It’ll never bring my son back, but I’m happy for justice finally,” victim Anthony Keith Camp?s mother, Deborah Lockyer, said after Judge Jon Shindurling handed down the sentence to Geoffrey Salem Elawadly.
Those who loved Camp hugged and cried outside the courtroom at the end of the proceeding.
Elawadly, 24, accepted responsibility for shooting and killing Camp in March of last year. He offered no statements Thursday.
Camp’s sister, Nicole Lockyer, did speak.
?Look at my parents’ face and see that their soul has been ripped out,” she said, through her tears. “Nobody will ever understand the pain that all of us are going through.”
It took police four days to find and arrest Elawadly after the shooting, which happened after a car chase and a drug deal gone wrong. Prosecutors said camp was not involved in that deal.
“This crime — it’s a series of mistakes that should not have happened,” the prosecutor said.
Prosecution recommended a 30-year indeterminate sentence to be added to the agreed-upon 10-year fixed sentence, from Elawadly’s plea agreement last month.
The defense asked for a 10-year indeterminate sentence, saying Elawadly has enough life ahead of him to change his ways.
“(Elawadly) wants to be a person who is productive to society,? the defense attorney said. ?He wants to be able to control his problems.”
Shindurling was not willing to take that risk with Elawadly.
“I’m just glad that this will never happen to anyone, ever again,? Deborah Lockyer said. ?Thank you for justice.”
Elawadly?s extensive criminal history, dating back to when he was 12 years old, is a potential reason behind the life sentence.
Elawadly was also charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and use of a deadly weapon in commission of a felony in connection with the shooting.
