Students, Firefighters Blaze Trail To Literacy

Idaho Falls School District 91’s annual “Blazing A Trail To Literacy” program just wrapped up, and students who read the most books during the school year got a ride to class from local firefighters.

Among the winners is Spencer Glass of Longfellow Elementary School, who has been trying to win a ride on a fire truck for the last three years.

Not only was Spencer the winner for his school this year, but he is also the winner for the entire district. He logged nearly 12,000 minutes during the reading contest.

Spencer loves reading books from the Hardy Boys series, and firefighters said they’re happy to serve as motivation for the students.

“We’re very happy to take them to school and we like to encourage them to read more,” said Capt. Jim Freeman with the Idaho Falls Fire Department.

In all, 12 students, including Spencer, got to ride to school in fire trucks.
