Animal shelter: fireworks and pets don’t mix

Because of the noise from fireworks a lot of pets run off scared.

The 4th of July holiday is the busiest time of year at animal shelters.

Volunteers said pets are found miles from their homes, confused, disoriented, tired and often times injured.

Pet owners are encouraged to make sure cats and dogs have collars with tags. Crating animals that are easily frightened by loud noises is also a good idea.

If you wish to tranquilize your pet, talk to your vet.

“There’s so much confusion and so many people and it’s just crazy, so don’t take them to the fireworks show or the parade,” said Irene Brown, animal services manager. “Leave them at home in a safe environment.”
